Mount Pleasant

THE CENTRE OF THE CITY JUST SHIFTED

Mount Pleasant – artistic and inventive, historic and modern, stylish and spirited. The centre of old town has become the energetic epicentre of new town. Vibrant shops, restaurants, cafés and parks are plentiful. This is a hub of cycling activity, and the sidewalks are alive with community and local character. It’s easy to see why this has become one of the most lively and sought-after neighbourhoods in Vancouver.

And if that wasn’t enough – from here, you can get anywhere.

The Fish Counter – Chef Robert Clark & Mike McDermid

  • What’s your favourite thing about the neighbourhood?
We love everything about it from great neighbour businesses to the vibrant residential community. Filled with colour and flavour Main St. really puts the "community" back into the neighbourhood.
  • What made you choose Main Street to plant your roots?
The whole premise of The Fish Counter was based on the Main St neighbourhood. In fact, we spent the about 2 years looking for the right location. The Main St community is a vibrant and growing community full of like-minded independent businesses and environmentally conscious residents who care about not only the quality, but also the sustainability of the products. Our seafood comes directly from these fishers so we have highest quality, freshest and most sustainable local seasonal seafood.
  • What excites you most about the future of Main Street?
I look forward to growing the community of local independent businesses supporting the Main St community so that all of your shopping can be done close to home. Great meats, seafood, bakery, produce and even local craft beer all within blocks of home!
  • What does INDEPENDENT mean to you?
To me it means local. Locally run businesses from people who live in the community and provide for the community.

  • What made you choose Main Street to plant your roots?
We've had businesses on the street and have been a part of the neighbourhood for almost a decade, so it just made sense. It's an amazing street with great people, the brewery just fits here.
  • What’s your beer of choice?
There are a ton of great beers and to pinpoint just one wouldn't be fair.
  • Describe your perfect day on Main Street.
Grab a coffee at one of the various coffee shops, walk around the neighbourhood, grab some lunch and then have dinner at one of the amazing restaurants from Pender Street all the way up to 30th Ave.
  • What does INDEPENDENT mean to you?
Independent signifies Main Street. It is filled with individuals that bring something different to the neighbourhood and make it an exciting place to do business.

Liberty Bakery – Shannon Oksanen & Rodney Graham

  • Tell us about how you came to own this neighbourhood favourite?
We had always been very loyal Liberty customers. Our eleven year old daughter has always been obsessed with their black bean soup and takes it daily as her school lunch. When we heard Liberty Bakery was for sale we really had no other option, we had to buy it!
  • What legacy of Liberty do you want to continue?
We want to keep Liberty Bakery a comfortable and cozy place for everyone in the neighbourhood.
  • What excites you most about the future of this neighbourhood?
We find the most exciting thing about the future of our neighourhood is watching our girls grow and play with all the other kids in the hood.
  • Tell us what we can expect from the next chapter at Liberty?
For the next chapter of Liberty Bakery we hope to continue as a friendly bakery but I do dream about opening for simple dinners.
  • What does INDEPENDENT mean to you?
    FREE and ALIVE!
